RIP Brother John. ๐ŸฅบIt is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Captain John Van Mannekes this morning just after 4:30am. John joined the department in May, 1996, and retired in July, 2017, to continue his hard fought battle with ALS. Please keep Rebecca, Jonathan, and Jamison in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. John was a dedicated father, husband, and Firefighter who held a deep passion for the Fire Service and a commitment to developing new Firefighters.

Our Fire Family grieves with many today, as John was well known and respected throughout the Fire Service. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Van Mannekes family now and always. Thank you, Captain Van Mannekes, for everything.

In Sympathy,
David Endaya, Fire Chief

Currently this is NOT a threat to Ventura County. This is the #TickFire going on now in #SantaClarita. VCFD has sent 2 strike teams to assist. We also have additional staffing pre-positioned throughout the County to manage any local fires. โ€ฌ

Together we can help stop these tragic accidents. Our condolences to all involved.FATAL VEHICLE VS. PEDESTRIAN COLLISION IN OXNARD:

12:50am on Monday morning, June 10, Oxnard Police Department, Fire and Gold Coast paramedics responded to a vehicle collision at the intersection of Saviers Road and Thomas Road in Oxnard.

The collision was described as a vehicle versus a pedestrian. Fire arriving to the scene reported finding a male, who Oxnard Police described as a 45 year old Filipino man, laying unconscious in the roadway.

The patient was transported to Ventura County Medical Center where Oxnard Police said the man succumbed to his injuries.

Oxnard Police Department provided further information in a statement,

"Based upon preliminary investigation, the male was walking in a crosswalk across Saviers Road at the intersection with Thomas Ave. A gray Scion XB was northbound on Saviers Road.

Witnesses stated that the Scion was passing through a green light and the pedestrian had walked against a red light when the vehicle struck him. The driver of the Scion remained on scene and was cooperative with investigators. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this collision.

Investigators are asking the public to come forward if anyone has witnessed this incident. The public is asked to contact Officer Mike Wood at (805) 385-7750. You can remain anonymous if you choose to do so.

You can also remain anonymous by calling the Ventura County Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.

Great job!OXNARDโ€™S FINEST - For as long as Mark Kupperman can remember, he always had a pineapple upside-down cake for his birthday. He even remembers his mother baking them for him when he was little. So Markโ€™s wife Judy set out to bake him one of her acclaimed cakes for his 85th birthday party, which was to be celebrated the next day.
As she pulled open the oven door, she was met with a whoosh of smoke and flames rushing out. She managed to safely jump back. Mark grabbed the fire extinguisher but couldnโ€™t get it to work. As Judy called 9-1-1, Mark ran to his neighborโ€™s home for help and together they managed to extinguish the fire. Moments later the Oxnard Fire Department arrived, rushed in, made sure the fire was completely out, jettisoned the smoldering oven into the yard and ventilated the home.
While the crew from Fire Station 6 was cleaning up debris from the fire, the captain asked how the fire started. Mark explained that it was his 85th birthday and that they were about to bake the cake; he had no idea how it began.
Soon the firefighters said goodbye and left.
At 7:30 that evening, the Kuppermans heard a knock at their door. Standing outside were the firefighters from Engine 66 and Rescue 66 who had responded earlier. โ€œItโ€™s Markโ€™s birthday and we wanted to make it a happy one for him,โ€ they said.
In their hands were two pineapple upside-down cakes adorned with candles shaped like an 8 and a 5. The firefighters also brought birthday cards and a balloon. They all sat down around the living room table and ate one of the cakes. (The second cake was for the party the next day). The firefighters explained that they found the recipe online, went to the store and bought the ingredients, then baked them in their firehouse oven, Mark said.
โ€œThey were very thoughtful people,โ€ said Mark. โ€œThey understood the result of that fire and how it pertained to me personally. They wouldn't do that job unless they loved the work."
Oxnard Fire Battalion Chief Nate La Russo commended his fellow firefighters.
โ€œIt goes without saying that we are blessed to work with some amazing people,โ€ he said. โ€œThis story highlights the compassion, dedication and service to our community that is inherent in the successful relationship of the Oxnard Fire Department with the community we protect.โ€
Happy birthday Mark!
